IB MYP Assessment Overview
Traditional Grading versus Criterion Related Grading
Traditional Grading | Criterion Related Grading | |
1 | One grade is given per subject. | Four academic scores are given (one for each IB criteria), four ATL skills are given (citizenship). |
2 | The letter grade given, based on a percentage, is often unclear. | The four criteria and levels are visible on rubrics and students are made aware of the requirements of each level ahead of time. |
3 | Calculate grades using average student performance (mean). | Grades are calculated using summative scores, work samples, growth, progress, and professional judgement to determine grades. |
4 | Uses uncertain mix of assessment of achievement, attitude, efforts, work skills, behavior, attendance, etc. Penalties and extra credit awarded, including group scores. | Measures only achievement. Attitudes, effort, behavior are assessed separately using the Approaches to Learning rubric. |
5 | Score everything regardless of purpose, and when it was collected. Assessments, record the average, not the best work. | Formative assessments “practice” do not determine summative grades. |
6 | Zeros are given for missing or incomplete work, then averaged into the final grade. | Zeros are given for incomplete work, but grades are based on achievement level. |
7 | Teacher makes decisions about grading and announces to students. | Students involved in the grading process and monitoring of their progress. |
